My name is Clementina Gomez, I am originally from Guatemala but have been
living in Charlotte NC for 3 years, I am an architect and a mom to 2 amazing toddlers.
My story starts as a young girl, when my self-esteem was shattered by my father who
would constantly criticize my body and compared me to other women. I would no longer
look at my body without picking it apart even though I wasn’t even overweight. I have
worked on improving the way I look myself since getting married, but this has been hard
for me. After my daughter was born, my weight went up and down due to complete
changes in lifestyle, moving to a different country, starting over and just beginning the
journey of motherhood.

A year after relocating, my son was born and started getting severe back pains.
Went to several doctors, tried physical therapy and medication but the pain was still
there. Somedays I felt like a zombie because of the drugs and a spectator watching my
life go by. I wasn’t even able to get out of bed without the help of my husband, and after
falling in depression and frustration from feeling like a burden, my weight went up to its
highest at 165. At the beginning of this year, I decided to take back my life and started
eating healthy and doing a limited amount of cardio. I lost a few pounds and felt better
than using medication, so continued moving forward even though it was hard and
painful.

This challenge helped me be consistent and accomplish so many goals. For the
first time I found a workout I enjoy doing (pilates), I understand you have to make the
time every day to exercise and eat well. Waking up a 5:30am every weekday and taking
care of myself before taking care of my family has changed my life. Finally reaching my
goal weight of 145 and dropping even more. I am falling in love with my body for the first
time and feel thankful for what it can do. I am more active with my kids, can hold a long
plank, do 50 push-ups and run (even participated in a 5k with a 37min mark). I can look
in the mirror and feel proud and happy.

Even though I’ve lost 9 pounds and 11.5 inches in the past 12 weeks, my
greatest accomplishment has been the healthy example I’ve given to my family. I no
longer talk about my body or weight in a negative way and have introduced healthy
eating habits. My hope is that by setting this example to my children, they will grow up
loving their bodies and taking care of them. I am sure I could not have gotten this far in
such a short time without the incentive of the challenge, the help from other NEM and
the support of my husband. I am forever grateful!
