This journey for me started well over 12 weeks ago. I have been overweight for most of my adult life,
and more so after having my two children. I have mostly worked at sedentary jobs, and I never really
took it upon myself to exercise. I also wasn’t eating healthy either. When I was pregnant with my second child, I developed gestational diabetes. I would like to say that this is when I woke up and smelled the roses, but it isn’t. I did what I needed to in order to keep myself and my son healthy, and was able to do so, thankfully, with diet alone. I ended up losing weight during the pregnancy, while my son still gained, and was born at 8 lbs. 3 oz. and with perfect sugar levels.

Then it all went downhill, all of the foods I couldn’t eat my entire pregnancy, I devoured any chance I got. I was breastfeeding so I needed the extra calories right? Wrong. I didn’t need the extra calories in carbs, but rather in fruits and veggies. I once again was not taking care of my body. About a year after the birth of my son, I was at the heaviest weight I had ever been, and I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was immediately put on an abundance of medication. Oh and I skipped the part where my husband had left for Basic Training for the Military in February that year, my diagnosis being in March, I was alone, with two kids, and a new scary incurable autoimmune disease. The medication that I was on made it hard for me to lose any weight, but I was trying. I wanted to be able to keep up with my kiddos, who were at the time 1 and 3 and running all over the place. I hired a babysitter to watch them Tuesday and Thursday evenings, so I could go to the gym. I worked hard, but I wasn’t losing.

We moved to Arizona in October of that year, and I joined the local NEM Group in Sierra Vista! It was an amazing group and I am more than thankful for the friendships and motivation I gained from it. I took part in the classes I could, brining my kiddos along with me to the parks for workouts. We were only at Fort Huachuca for a short period of time, and then moved to Fort Riley in Kansas. There isn’t an active group close by, but I continued to stay in the know through No Excuse Moms on Facebook. When I first moved to Fort Riley, I learned of a surgery that was covered by my insurance that may help me to lose the weight that I was so desperately trying to. I had monthly appointments to go over my diet and exercise with my doctor for 6 months, and was cleared by psych and my rheumatologist, before being approved for gastric sleeve surgery.

In May of 2018, I had gastric sleeve surgery, weighing in at 225 pounds, the most I had ever weighed in my life. It changed my life, in just the six short months after, I have lost over 30% of my body weight, currently weighing 154 lbs. I go to the gym at least three times a week, if not more, and I love it! I have more motivation than ever! I can run and play with my kids, I can help them discover new healthy foods! At the beginning of this NEM Challenge my weight loss was starting to slow down, which is normal, but I wanted to push myself to do better, and keep at it. That is what I have done, keeping track on my calendar and posting in my local group to keep myself accountable has made all the difference and allowed me to lose another 13 lbs. over 12 weeks. I’m excited to continue to use the tools I was given, be it surgery, no excuse moms, or a membership to the gym to keep myself in shape and live a longer healthier life.
